There are 3 spray patterns to choose from.  It is easiest to select the pattern before putting the unit in the ground.  Just pull the turret up out of the cannister.  Grasp the riser in one hand while turning the nozzle with the other.  The patterns are printed on the top of the grey nozzle.  Turn the nozzle to the right until you will feel a click at your desired pattern.
